The New Japan
Over and over again contemporary modern Japanese
architects arouse worldwide interest with their
buildings.
A new reading of traditional living conditions, the
minimalistic use of pure construction materials and
elements of western modern architecture result in
surprising buildings.
Tadao Ando is the best known Japanese architect
worldwide. His "trademark" is pure concrete in
combination with abstract glass and steel surfaces.
Shigeru Ban experiments with cardboard and uses
this construction material for houses for the
earthquake refugees in Kobe.
Toyo Ito designs futuristic buildings. Opaque,
clear or reflecting materials lead to a poetic
architecture.
Isuko Hasegawa designs big projects like civic
centers, libraries or media centers.
The four architects are presented through interviews
and a selection of their current best buildings. The
film music was composed exclusively for this film.
